Learning a language doesn’t have to mean only books, vocabulary lists, and the look of “I hope the day comes when I suddenly think: I know this—but I have no idea how or why.”
Watching series is like a gym for your ears—only much more fun. You sit down, hit play, jot down what catches your attention, replay scenes, and suddenly you’re understanding jokes, odd expressions, and accents you’ve never heard before. And when the story pulls you in, you hardly even notice you’re practicing. For learners at B1 or B2 level, series provide that little boost that turns textbook German into real “everyday German”—without the pain of grammar drills.
Here are some series episodes for those moments when you feel like watching something in German and learning at the same time.If you’re at B1, short episodes of about 10 minutes are ideal—they keep your brain fresh. At B2, you can already go for episodes up to about 25 minutes.
Why? Because concentration isn’t endless, and it’s better to finish wanting more than to fall asleep halfway through an episode.
Here’s an example episode to get you started so you can look for the next ones yourself. ;)

SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated series that began in 1999 on the Nickelodeon channel. It tells the wacky adventures of an optimistic sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea and works as a cook in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom.
In this episode: Squidward is fed up with Mr. Krabs’ constant insults and decides to quit his job at the Krusty Krab. However, finding a new job isn’t as easy as he thought. Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick join Squidward on a “test run” in which he becomes a bus driver, leading to plenty of fun and chaotic situations along the way.

Two inventive stepbrothers spend every summer day dreaming up impossible inventions and huge adventures, while their sister Candace tries to get their mom to catch them in the act. Meanwhile, Agent Perry the Platypus foils the evil plans of Dr. Doofenshmirtz.
In the episode “Endlich erwischt!, Part 1” (“Finally Caught!, Part 1”): Candace finally manages to get her mother to see what Phineas and Ferb are up to—but the triumph gets complicated. The boys are sent to a “correctional school” that is actually hiding a brainwashing scheme, and Candace must rescue them before they lose their creativity.

In this 1976 animated film, Julius Caesar sets the Gauls (Asterix, Obelix, and company) twelve tasks to prove that they are not gods. One of those challenges takes them through complex Roman bureaucratic mazes, monsters, and absurd trials—everything full of humor and impossible situations.
In this episode: Asterix and Obelix must obtain a form called Passierschein A38 in a huge administrative building. There, they are sent from one counter to another, with each clerk claiming the process belongs to someone else. After endless corridors and completely absurd paperwork, they create so much confusion that the entire office goes mad—and in the end, they finally get the permit. It’s a funny satire of bureaucracy that can drive anyone crazy.

The series portrays, with humor and a touch of drama, the typical ups and downs of adolescence: changing friendships, first loves, family problems, and the challenge of finding one’s own voice. It stands out for its characters who genuinely grow and evolve over the course of the episodes—something quite rare in animated shows.
When Darren gets his braces removed, he suddenly becomes the most popular boy in school. Ginger starts to realize she might have feelings for him… and when Darren begins a relationship with Miranda, she decides to give him the “cold shoulder” to protect herself. Meanwhile, Brandon’s pet monkey, Mr. Licorice, disappears, and Carl and Hoodsey take on the task of finding him.

There he tells them the story of his past with Goldie, a former flame and partner from his gold-mining days, and how he came to believe that she once stole his gold. Upon their return, he discovers that his old claim has been taken over and embarks on a series of adventures to reclaim what is his and clear up misunderstandings.

The Smurfs is an animated series that originated from the Belgian comics by Peyo and became popular on television in the 1980s.
It tells the story of a hidden village in the forest where small blue creatures—the Smurfs—live together in harmony, each with a distinctive personality (Philosopher, Grouchy, Chef, etc.). Together they must constantly outsmart the evil wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael, who are always trying to capture them. The series blends humor, adventure, and the values of friendship and cooperation.
In this episode: Schürfi discovers a crown during an underground excavation, a crown that once belonged to an ancient titan and grants unlimited power to whoever wears it.
